Last fixture review - READING v Huddersfield Town
Reading's season started with a bang as promoted Blackpool, who finished 7th in division 3 last season, were casually knocked aside by Reading's proffesional approach. The Royals depended on Phil Whitehead's goalkeeping abilities to keep them ahead in the first half after captain Phil Parkinson had scored with a perfectly placed header from an Alex Smith corner. However, Reading closed down their opposition with a real hunger that appeared lacking last season and were duly rewarded when Nicky Forster ran though to score on his start for a year. All bodes well for the coming campaign with the Royals currently in third place in division 2.

READING v TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
A Capacity crowd saw a determined Reading team battle with their premiership opponents and come off second best, but having made their mark. Showing complete disrespect for the reputations of Gus Poyet, Les Ferdinand and Christian Ziege James Harper and Tony Rougier deserve mention for penetrating runs and dazzling skills but credit must go to the entire team who held on to a 1-0 deficit until the 90th minute. As Glenn Hoddle also pointed out, Phil Whitehead was in his superb form he experienced last season and the team was looking good. Substitute Joe Gamble also made an impression, the teenage Irishman beating several Spurs stars. Another sub, Chris Casper made his first appearance of almost two years when he came of the bench in the last minute. However Spurs won on the day with Ledley King outstanding at the back and Ziege and Anderton suppling strikers Rebrov and Ferdinand. Ferdinand wasted Spur's first chance when firing wide after finding himself clean though. James Harper nearly but the Royals in front after rounding the Spurs defence but could not steer the ball into the net. Spurs took the lead however on the 26th minute as new signing Gus Poyet tapped in at the far post following a cross. The Royals then held on untill the 89th minute when Sergei Rebrov finally slotted home, having earlier hit the post. All in all a creditable performance with new signing Alex Smith looking sharp on his debut and ex-Arsenal Harper oozing class.
