ROYALS RECENT HISTORY AND QUICK GUIDE
Reading FC, the only league football team in Berkshire was formed in 1871 and has played since its 1998 move from Elm Park at the new Madejski Stadium with it's capacity of almost 25,000. The Stadium is named after millionaire chairman John Madejski to whom the club is indebted for all his dosh. Reading's trophies include the 2nd and 3rd division titles and the club has been relatively successful in recent years, narrowly missing out on Premiership football in 1995 when they lost 4-2 to Bolton in the Division 1 Play-off final after being entered for the play-offs despite finishing 2nd in the table. (The clubs highest ever league finish to date) Relegation to the 2nd division followed in 1998 where the team has established itself as a major force after the 2000/01 campaign when they finished 3rd and lost the play-off final 3-2 at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. Despite releasing seven players (including "podgy" playmaker Darren "Pieman" "Fatboy" Caskey) after this disappointment, many pundits tiped Reading as this years champions. The season started well with the Royals being the last team in England to concede a goal and with a giant-killing penalty shootout in a thriller against Premiership West Ham United but with, elimination from the cup after the hoops sliped into the bottom half of the league table the opinion in the royal county was that the management team might have been outstaying their welcome. Hence, influential assistant Martin MAD DOG Allen was sacked and the team charged up the league, opening a clear gap at the top by 25/01/02. However a run of 8 draws out of 9 gifted Brighton the Championship but a dramatic goal 13 mins from the end of the season sealed automatic promotion to division one as Reading return to the top 2 of English football for the first time since 1998. This season we at URZ predict a second successive promotion!
